Don’t Take Anyone for Granted : The Inspiring Story Behind Stanford University

Life often teaches us the most valuable lessons in unexpected ways. One such story is about a wealthy couple from California, whose deep sorrow and immense love for their son led to the creation of one of the world’s most prestigious universities — Stanford University.

A Tragic Beginning

In 1884, a wealthy couple from California lost their only 15-year-old son to typhoid. Their son had been recently admitted to Harvard, filled with dreams and ambition to study. But destiny had different plans, and the boy passed away before completing his education.

Despite their grief, the couple chose to look at life differently. They decided that although God had taken their son, they would dedicate their love to all the sons and daughters of California.

A Visit to Harvard University

The couple went to Harvard University and requested to meet the president. Their simple clothing and ordinary appearance did not reflect their wealth. When they told the president that they wanted to do something at Harvard in memory of their son, the president dismissed them, saying:

“Do you know the cost of these buildings? This property is worth 7.5 million dollars. What could you possibly do to honor your son here?”

The Birth of Stanford University

Hurt but not discouraged, the couple left Harvard with a smile. Instead of donating to Harvard, they made a bold decision:

“This is all it costs to build a university? Then let’s build a university in memory of our son.”

That couple was Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford, and the university they established became Stanford University — today one of the top-ranked universities in the world.

Life Lesson: Never Judge or Take People for Granted

The Harvard president judged the couple by their appearance, not realizing their capacity to create something extraordinary. This story teaches us:

  • Never underestimate anyone based on their looks or lifestyle.
  • Respect and kindness cost nothing, but they can change lives.
  • Greatness often comes from pain and struggle, transformed into purpose.
